Abstract: Back Grounds: The HBO is an effective sudden hearing loss treatment. The spontaneous improvement and the pharmacological therapy make somehow difficult the results evaluation. Methods: A retrospective study is made on 95 patients treated with HBO from 1996 to 1999, with analysis of the outcome, the answer time and the delay of therapy influence. The treatment is made at 2.2 ATA, with 75 minutes of O2 breathing. RESULTS: 49 Male and 46 female patients aged 13-78 years (mean 45). The hearing loss varied from 20 to 120 dB (mean 76.4 ±25). The HBO sessions were a meaning of 2l±7.5 within a maximum period of 3 months. 78.9% of patients had a variable improvement from 10 to 80 dB (mean 38.3±8.3 dB); 41% gained > 20 dB ; in 11.6% there were complete recovery. The delay of treatment varied from 1 day till 5 months. In 58% treatment was started within 10 days of diagnosis. All had received medical treatment, and this was inefficient in 80%. The poor results were seen in patients who started their HBO treatment lately with a delay of 120±238 days, while those who showed improvement had started their treatment within 11.3 ± 10.4 (P=0.000) of the onset. An audioemtric improvement was seen in 71.6% of cases treated within 14 days of the onset of symptoms; while only 40% of the remaining cases had shown a favourable outcome (P= 0.008). Partial recovery of the tinnitus was seen in 70.9% and complete recovery in 11.6%; vertigo show partial or complete recovery in 83.3% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: HBO is an effective therapy in sudden hearing loss specially if started within 2 weeks of the onset. The percentage of patients who improved with HBO is greater than those who recover spontaneously.
