Title: [abstract] HBO EFFECT ON IGF-1 and IGFBP 3 SERUM LEVELS.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is known as an effective stimulator of physiological proliferating processes especially in wound healing. To evaluate the effects of HBO on secretion patterns of human growth factors we investigated the HBO effect on systemic IGF-1 and IGF binding protein 3 serum (IGFBP-3) levels. METHOD: 18 patients with sudden deafness were treated 10 days with HBO (2 x 30min oxygen/day, 2,5bar). On treatment day 1,3 and 9 ten minutes before and after first HBO therapy 5ml serum was collected and frozen on -40°C. IGF-1 and IGFBP3 was detected in the radio immuno assay technique (Nichols). RESULTS: Mean ranking in Friedman Test (p>0.05). Day 1, Day 1, Day 3, Day 9, Day 9; IGFBP-3, 3.83, 3.69, 3.97, 3.39, 2.58, 3.53; IGF-1, 3.36,3.97, 3.11, 3.94, 3.22, 3.39; Neither in short-term nor long-term HBO a significant alteration of IGF-I or IGFBP3 serum levels were observed. CONCLUSION: We found no effect of HBO on systemic IGF-1 and IGFBP3 secretion during 9 days of therapy. Stimulation of wound healing processes during HBO is not influenced by systemic changes in IGF-1 or IGFBP 3 concentrations.
