Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Hperbaric oxygenation has been shown to alter neutrophil response in ischemia reperfusion injuries such as compartment syndrome. An animal model was developed to test the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation therapy when used with a fasciotomy in the treatment of compartment syndrome. METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four treatment groups (n=3). The first treatment group (group 1) was not infused to create a compartment syndrome and did not receive a fasciotomy or hyperbaric treatment. The second group (group 2) only received hyperbaric treatment. Compartment syndrome was induced in the third group (group 3) and a fasciotomy was performed. Compartment syndrome was induced in the fourth group and a fasciotomy was performed and hyperbaric oxygenation treatment was administered. The opposing legs were used as controls for each rabbit studied. The ratio of contraction of the treated leg to the control leg measured following treatment. RESULTS: The contraction ratios for groups 1 through 4 were 0.988 (0.0397), 0.970 (0.0230), 0.060 (0.0114), and 0.602 (0.0296), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This model demonstrates the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygenation in the treatment of compartment syndrome. Further it was demonstrated that a Codman catheter could be used to continuously measure intracompartmental pressures and potentially assist in providing earlier medical intervention.
