Abstract: These experiments begin a comparison of the decompression properties of helium (He) and hydrogen (H2)in rats. Unanesthetized male albino rats were subjected to 60-min He-O2 or H2-O2 dives (2% 0,)at depths ranging from 19 to 50 ATA. Animals were then rapidly decompressed to 11 ATA where they were observed for 30 min for signs of decompression sickness (DCS). These profiles, which minimize gas elimination during ascent, were used to compare the relative risk of equal pressures of the 2 gases, assuming 60 min was sufficient to achieve animal saturation with He or H2. Preliminary analysis of our data using maximum likelihood suggests that H2 may be up to 40% riskier than He on a per unit pressure basis. This difference in decompression risk may be important in determining the value of using H2 as a human diving gas. However, other gas properties such as washout kinetics may be more important when decompression is done slowly as with human diving. For example, if H2 is eliminated from the body faster than He during ascent, the risk of developing DCS may be lower using H2.
