Author: Mano, Y; Nakayama, T; Shibayama, M; Yamami, N; Kawashima, M
Abstract: We have checked up 1,730 divers and 2,429 compressed air workers on their medical conditions, and also 1,821 divers and 3,554 compressed air workers on their bone X-rays for these twelve years. According to the regulation of the Ministry of Labor on a medical examination for them, 4,099 persons of the total number of 4,859 could pass the exam for their work (84.4 %). Divers' mean age was 30.5 years and others' age was 33.9 years old. They have been classified from A to D. Class B can work within 2 ATA and the number was 357 (7.3 %) and mean age was 35.0 years. Class C must be advised not to work under high pressure though they are not prohibited by the regulation. Their number was 183 (3.8 %) and their age was 37.0 years. Class D is prohibited to work and the number was 88 (1.8 %) and their age was 37.9 years. Mean age becomes up according to their bad conditions in both group, however the ratio of each class is near same. 5,375 persons have been checked their bone X-rays and 465 of them were pointed out their abnormality (8.7 %) between Type A, B and C according to Kawashima et al's classification. There are no significant differences between divers and compressed air workers. The ratio of Type A is 2.2 %, Type B is 20.9 % and Type C is 76.9 %. The worst type of A was 12 cases in 546 total sites of bone lesion (2.2 %) and this rate was quite low persentages compared with Tairagi shellfish helmet divers of 18.0 %. Such case of Tairagi divers in Kyushu area would be a special district case report in Japan.
