dc.description.abstract The actions of inert and anesthetic gases may either take the form of narcotic or non-narcotic effects as based on the widely accepted definition of narcosis. Very little is known about the molecular mechanisms of these effects. The method for this work involves the use of E. coli, which is known to univalently reduce methyl viologen intracellularly to form a free radical. This radical may either react intracellularlY or diffuse out of the cell envelope and react with an indicator substance (e.g. cytochrome c) extracellularly. This report will present data demonstrating that N20 enhances the propensity of free radicals formed within a cell to react with cellular contents. Inert gases such as argon enhance this effect, furthering the view that non-polar interations within the cell structure can sensitize cellular components to free radical attack. These findings point to one possible molecular mechanism for some of the non-narcotic actions of anesthetic gases. Particular reference will be made to the microbial growth inhibiting action of non-polar gases. en
