Abstract: Mice were sacrificed by deep freezing in liquid nitrogen, following a 15 minutes exposure at 6 ATA of pure oxygen (HPO), or at the onset of a seizure. Other animals were exposed for the same time to 6 ATA of N2 + O2 or He + O2 (P O2 inside the chamber: 0.21 atm). In control mice, kept in air 1 ATA, levels of brain glycogen (glucosyl units), glucose and lactate were respectively 3.21, 1.09 and 2.15 u mole/g (wet tissue). The three hyperbaric ambiances significantly increase the brain glucose level (02: 76 percent, N9: 57 percent, He: 39 percent) and decrease brain lactate (02: 13 percent, N2: 35 percent, He: 34 percent). These modifications are observed as soon as the end of compression (1 atm/min), and the values return to initial levels during decompression (1 atm/min). Stresses (acute 116 db A noise and roughly handling of animals) lack to produce similar effects. Osmotic phenomena or an alteration of the glucose permeability at cellular membrane level may be responsible for these non specific effects of gases at pressure corresponding to nitrogen narcosis. In mice exposed to HPO, these modified levels are accompanied by an early decreased brain glycogen. Preconvulsive symptoms are concomitant with a secondary decrease of glucose and glycogen, and with an increase of lactate level. This apparent stimulation of glycolysis and glycogenolysis by HPO is more pronounced in mice freezed at the onset of convulsion. At that time, glucose and lactate levels are close to the control values.
