Abstract: BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a hyperbaric oxygenation exposure (HBO) on subsequent treadmill performance time (PT), blood lactate concentration (BLa), heart rate (HR), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during a maximal treadmill run until exhaustion. METHODS: Nine physically active male runners (mean age=28 +/- 2.83 yrs) were studied. On two separate occasions each subject received hyperbaric exposures inspiring 100percent O2 at 2.0 ATA for one hour or a SHAM treatment inspiring air at 1.2 ATA for the same length of time. A double blind crossover design was used. Treadmill running was performed at 10 mph with a predetermined grade designed to induce exhaustion between 1 and 2 minutes. RESULTS: No significant differences (p greater than 0.05) were observed in PT, RPE, post-pre HR or BLa. Measurement HBO SHAM (mean+/-SD , PT (seconds) 79.56+/-14.63 84.44+/-20.01, BLa (post-pre) 6.57+/-1.86 6.51+/-1.67 (mmol/L) , HR (post-pre) 99.67+/-8.34 102.67+/-10.33 (b/min) , RPE 17.89+/-1.17 18.88+/-0.87. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the effects of a single 1 hour HBO exposure on high-repetition, low resistance anaerobic exercise lasting 1 to 2 minutes are negligible and brings to question the currently accepted brochemical and physiological rate limiting roles of oxygen in energy production and lactic acid formation.
