Abstract: Data from 51 subjects and 218 exposures in a continuing multiday (DAY1 vs. DAY>=2) recreational diver study (UBR suppl. 1992 #106) were analyzed for DCS risk score (DSRS) against Doppler bubbles. Profile data was retrieved from Suunto Dive Computer memory. DSRS (Gerth, AAUS Repetitive Dive Workshop, 1991) ranged from 0 to 3.9%. Spencer scores 0-4 were obtained from a Techno Scientific Doppler. A repeated measures logistic regression model estimated relative odds for Doppler score>0 (RO>0). Multivariate analysis correlated dive time, maximum reported depth and repetitive diving to DSRS (coeff.=0.019 0.012 & 0.349) each at P<0.0001 but not age or gender. DAYl vs DAY>=2 showed marginal (P=0.054) correlation (coeff.=-0.158). The odds of RO>0 increased by factors of 2.21 per 1% DSRS rise; by 1.14 per 10 foot of maximum reported depth despite inclusion of depth in the DSRS calculation; by 7.69 for DAYl vs. DAY>=2 and by 1.8 per 10 years of age. RO>0 was a marginal 2.54 times greater for males vs females (P=0.06) . RO>0 did not change for repetitive diving or dive time and may be accounted for by the DSRS calculation. The data suggests that for these divers DSRS increases with maximum reported depth, dive time and repetitive diving; DAYl presents higher RO>0 vs. DAY>=2 and that the DSRS model, although highly predictive of actual risk of bubbling, did not fully account for the additional risks for males, DAY1, older divers, and maximum reported depth.
