dc.description.abstract BACKGROUND: Results of two tests that characterize differences pedalling a cycle ergometer immersed (wet) compared to dry are described. They enable match of VO2 in dry/wet comparisons and provide relationships between VO2 and pedal rate. METHODS: A frame supports a W.E. Collins, Inc. brake unit above water level, a crank underwater, and an adjustable seat. An underwater speaker provides feedback of pedal rate status (low/high frequency tone=pedal rate too low/high, no tone=pedal rate correct +/- 2 rpm) to the subject. RESULTS: 1) VO2 vs imposed ergometer setting in watts (W) is linear in both dry and wet pedalling; 60 rpm, N-8: VO2=0.534+(0.00948)(W), R2=0.9865, 30-200 W range (dry); VO2=1.084+(0.00930)(W), R2=0.9917, 30-150 W range (wet) 2) VO2 vs pedal rate is nonlinear; second order power function curve fits over the range 40-80 rpm (N=8) are : VO2=l.772-0.0232(rpm)+0.000256(rpm)2, constant W=88 (dry); VO2=1.514-0.0423(rpm)+0.000670(rpm)2, constant W=30 (wet) where W=88 dry & 30 wet were selected for VO2 match at 60 rpm. CONCLUSIONS: At constant ergometer W and 60 rpm, the added O2 cost of pedalling in water is about 0.520 l/min, equivalent to about 1 watt/rev. Over rpm range of 50-70 at constant W, VO2 varies about 0.75 l/min wet compared to 0.15 1/min dry.
