Title: [abstract] OXYGEN TOXICITY SEIZURES. AN 18 YEAR REVIEW.
Author: Wreford-Brown, CE; Wreford-Brown, PC
Abstract: INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: The incidence of Oxygen Central Nervous System Toxicity seizures (OCNSTS) among patients is generally estimated to be 1:10,000 treatments (Jefferson Davis, 1989). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 54,246 records of hyperbaric treatments, from 1989 – 2007 were reviewed for OCNTS. OVERVIEW: 42 OCTNS were noted giving an overall incidence of 1: 1291. 16 OCTNS occurred in the 51,406 routine patient treatments of avascular hypoxic wounds of 2.36 ATA/ 90 min oxygen (O2) with 30 min O2 periods with an incidence of 1: 3,212. The majority of seizures were in the final third of the second O2 period. The highest incidence of 1:95 was in the treatments of carbon monoxide patients followed by an incidence of 1:213 in the treatment of decompression sickness. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of OCTNTS varies widely by diagnosis and treatment profile.
