dc.description Abstract of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society Annual Scientific Meeting held June 19-23, 1991 at San Diego Princess Resort, San Diego, CA. en
dc.description.abstract With anticipated demands for high quality, cost effective hyperbaric care and forecasted shortages of both RN's and skilled technical staff, it is essential to operate hyperbaric departments efficiently and effectively . This can be achieved by defining the interrelationship of various job roles pertaining to both patient care and chamber operations. In order to more effectively meet these unique staffing demands at the Hyperbaric Medicine Department at St. Luke's Medical Center, a competency based training and orientation program was developed that encompasses the roles of all chamber personnel including a flexible on-call staff. This program allows flexibility while maintaining consistency in training techniques and evaluation of all levels of staff undergoing orientation. Also inherent in this orientation is a measurable method of maintaining standards of practice through ongoing competency checks. This presentation will include all aspects of this training program. It will outline anticipated benefits, the enhancement of nursing practice within the department, and the upgraded patient care delivery skills of chamber technicians resulting in a well defined and organized nursing and technical team approach. en
