Title: [abstract] REDUCED PULMONARY FUNCTION IN SATURATION DIVERS CORRELATES WITH DIVING EXPOSURE.
Author: Thorsen, E; Segadal, K; Kambestad, BK; Gulsvik, A
Abstract: Pulmonary function was measured in 152 saturation divers and in a control group of 106 subjects matched for age, height and smoking habits. Static lung volumes, dynamic lung volumes and flows, transfer factor for carbon monoxide, delta-N2 and closing volume were measured and compared with reference values of recent Scandinavian studies and of British submariners. Diving exposure was assessed as the years of diving experience, total number of days in saturation and maximum diving depth. Divers had significantly lower values for FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, FEF25_75%, FEF50%, FEF75% TlCO and KCO compared with the controls (p<0.01). Closing volume was higher in divers (p<0.01). There was a significant correlation between diving exposure measured as number of days in saturation and impairments of lung function (p<0.01). The control group was not significantly different from the reference values. The pattern of the differences in lung function variables between the divers and the control group is consistant with small airways dysfunction in divers, and are in agreement with the transient changes in lung function demonstrated immediately after a single saturation dive. The association between reduced lung function and previous diving exposure is a strong indication of the presence of a cumulative long term effect of diving on pulmonary function.
