Title: [abstract] IDIOPATHIC ASEPTIC NECROSIS OF THE FEMORAL HEAD, TREATMENT WITH HYPERBARIC OXYGEN.
Author: Curry, KM; Bartow, WR; Moses, S; Montalbano, F; Titus, J
Abstract: Although Idiopathic Aseptic Necrosis of the hip is not one of the 13 approved indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the pathalogic lesion of microvascular obliteration with ischemic changes is so similar to the pathologic lesion in radiation injury (which is a known indication for HBO) that attempts have been made to aid this condition with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In this paper we report our experience in treating 4 patients. Our average follow up is 25 months (range 8 to 40 months). All patients experienced rapid and lasting pain relief with no MRI, radiologic, or symptomatic evidence of progression of their disease process.
