Abstract: O2 breathing during no-stop dive surface intervals (SI) eliminates absorbed N2 and might increase repetitive dive time. Phase I tested this concept in chamber trials of 4 N2/O2 dive profiles with dry, resting divers. Profiles had 3 no-stop dives to 70 fsw (36% O2) or 120 fsw (32% O2) with 30 or 120 min SI's. Profiles and results were: [table] D1, T1, A/O2/A, N, D2, T2, A/O2/A, N, D3, T3, A/O2/A, N; A: 70, 55, 0/30/0, 25, 70, 40, 0/30/0, 22, 70, 30, 0/30/-, 22; B: 120, 25, 0/30/0, 25, 120, 15, 0/30/0, 22, 120, 15, 0/30/-, 22; C: 70, 55, 90/30/0, 25, 70, 45, 90/30/0, 22, 70, 45, 90/30/-, 22; D: 120, 25, 90/30/0, 28, 120, 20, 90/30/0, 23, 120, 20, 90/30/-, 23; -120, 25, 30-DCS, A/O2/A-Air&O2 times, min; N-Trials [end table] Total bottom times were 34-120% longer than equivalent NOAA nitrox dives and 65-267% longer than USN air dives. Subjects dove once per profile. One knee pain incident occurred after the first 120 fsw (98 fsw EAD) dive of Profile D before SIO2. 7% of the subjects had Doppler detectable VGE (Spencer protocol). There were no signs or symptoms of CNS O2 toxicity and no vital capacity changes. Quidel immunoassays of complement components C5-C9 in blood samples drawn pre-dive, within 30 min of each dive, and 2 hr after the last dive showed no statistically significant changes. The subject with DCS had acutely elevated assays. Supported by NOAA/NURP at UNC-W, NA88AA-D-UR004.
