Title: [abstract] MEASUREMENT OF FREE RADICALS DURING DELIVERY OF HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY.
Author: McCartney, PW; Vial, J; Narkowicz, C
Abstract: Free radicals are present in biological systems and play a part in normal physiology. The level of oxygen driven free radicals is increased in hyperbaric conditions and in SCUBA diving. The present state of knowledge of these highly active species needs to be expanded because in the overall delivery of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy the higher levels can be advantageous to the therapist especially if the intent ion is the killing of anaerobic organisms. Excessively high levels if maintained for unwarranted lengths of time are harmful; this study set out to measure the levels of oxygen driven free radicals generated during average profiles of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Method fit volunteer divers were subjected to levels of oxygen stress and blood was taken from these volunteers at serial intervals. The blood was frozen in liquid nitrogen immediately in the chamber and later subjected to electron spin resonance analysis to ascertain the amplitude of the free radical signal. The intention is to more accurately focus Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy maximizing the beneficial effects of the therapy and reducing unnecessary lengthy exposures to high levels of this potentially damaging species, frequent rest periods may also be of positive benefit, the recommencement of oxygen breathing with its attendant surge of free driven radicals may be the parameter that is most beneficial in the therapy. Fine tuning of pressure and oxygen percentage may also offer a specific benefit.
