dc.description.abstract The relative safety of single and repeat/multi-level dives is being studied using mathematical models to calculate the probability of decompression sickness [P(DCS)] for each dive profile. Our underlying models contain a number of adjustable parameters whose values have been optimized by applying the parameter estimation technique of maximum likelihood analysis to a diverse collection of wet dive data. The current data base includes 1450 single dives and 556 repeat/multi-level dives. Of these 2006 dives, 921 were air, 563 were on a constant 0.7 atm oxygen, and 522 were on other nitrox breathing mixes. We have found no appreciable statistical support for using a different set of parameter values for repeat/multi-level dives than for single dives. That is, we can use a model calibrated against single dives to predict the outcome of repeat/multi-level dives. Also, we find that the partial pressure of oxygen in the breathing gas mix has a negligible effect on P(DCS) and that models that ignore dissolved oxygen do not require different parameters for different nitrogen/oxygen breathing mixes. A single probabilistic model that can describe any type of nitrox dive now seems attainable. The calibrated models are being used as a tool to assess the safety of established repeat dive procedures.
