Title: [abstract] CORE TEMPERATURE IN MAN DURING INTERMITTENT HYPEROXIA IN PREDICTIVE STUDIES VI.
Author: Stevens, WC; Gelfand, R; Clark, JM; Lambertsen, CJ
Abstract: Core temperature (Tc) of rats decreases monotonically over time with progressively greater slopes at O2 pressures of 1.0 to 5.8 ATA (Puglia et.al., JAP. 36(2);149-153, 1974). In man, small decrements in Tc; with early onset and steeper slope at higher pressures were observed during exposures to hyperoxia at 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 AHA (PS V). At corresponding times of day, Tc increased during hypoxia at 1.5 ATA or was largely unchanged during normoxia at 1.0 ATA (Gelfand, et.al., UBR 14 (2):S28, 1987). Temperature changes during two schedules of intermittent hyperoxia (60:15 and 30:30 min hyperoxia:min normoxia) at 2.0 ATA are summarized here. During 60:15, Tc was unchanged until late in exposure, when it rose significantly by 0.2 *C over 3 h. During 30:30, Tc started to decline after 7 h of exposure, fell 0.5 *C over the next 8 h, (nadir at 0500), then rose progressively by 0.7 *C over the remaining 14 h of intermittent exposure. Due to interruptions in the normal sleep-wake cycle, these patterns of change must be interpreted with reference to findings during analogous exposures to 1.0 ATA normoxia, and continuous hyperoxia at 1.5 and 2.0 ATA. The observed changes were small and well within the normal physiologic range. However, they are consistent with other results of PS V and VI related to enhancement of oxygen tolerance during intermittent hyperoxia.
