dc.description.abstract Cardiovascular deconditioning occurs in weighlessness, bed rest, and heat-out water immersion. An expanded central vascular volume exists in all of these and during hyperbaric exposure. Therefore, one suspects circulatory deconditioning occurs also, but yet unproven, in hyperbaria. Three males participated in orthostatic tests before, during, and after hyperbaric exposure. The subjects were tilted 3 times on each test day (8 am, 3 & 8 pm) to vertical position for 15 min unless intervened by fainting. Tests were carried out on 2 days predive, 1st and 6th days at 31 ATA, 2 days around 21 ATA during decompression and 2 days immediately post-dive. Impedance cardiography and sphygmomanometry provided data on cardiovascular responses and cardiovascular index of deconditioning (CID). Blood analysis furnished data on hematocrit (reflects plasma volume changes) and hormonal changes (indicates compensatory responses). One subject fainted during the test in the morning of the 1st day at 31 ATA, and again in the morning at 21 ATA. The fact that one subject fainted in hyperbaria where none was found pre-and post-exposure suggests a deconditioned state at pressure. Computed CID supports this contention. This condition may be a reflection of body fluid imbalance and/or deficiency in compensatory mechanisms and for devising corrective protocols. It is significant to find an elevated plasma ADH conc. during tilts at 1 ATA, and that ADH level was depressed pre-tilt and unresponsive during tilt in 31 ATA tests.
