Title: [abstract] IMMUNOGLOBULIN PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE DURING A 350 MSW WORKING SATURATION CHAMBER DIVE.
Author: Paciorek, JA
Abstract: Divers living in a saturation habitat are frequently exposed to and may experience a wide variety of superficial infections. Due to the expenses of either terminating a dive or removal of an affected diver from the chamber, a vigorous chamber dysinfectious procedure has been introduced. Prophylactic ear drops used daily by the divers were obligatory. Infectious conditions are associated intimately with the functions of the immuno system, that it is possible to classify human infection on the basis of local/systemic, specific/nonspecific and cellular/ humoral immuno mechanisms. In essence, any infectious disease implies that the immune defence system has been breached. A pilot programme to investigate the serum immunoglobulins IgG, IgA, IgM and IgD levels at pre dive, during the dive and in the post dive period were established; it was decided to measure these levels in association with leucocyte counts and monitor chamber-bacteriological flora. Serum IgG remained at a constant level throughout the dive, which has a serum half life of 21 days, thus implying that there was a continuous synthesis of IgG. the same was observed for IgA, IgM and IgO which have half lives of only a few days in the circulation. Leucocytes counts remained normal during the examination period. One diver however, exhibited a local skin infection and his IgG level rose by 35%; no infection was otherwise observed. Post dive each diver showed a 10-15% increase in all immunoglobulin synthesis, but the levels were well within the normal range for assessment by immunodiffusion techniques.
