Title: [abstract] MEASURING THE TIME COURSE OF NARCOSIS

Abstract: A computer controlled 5-choice serial un-paced reaction time task has been developed to allow the continuous monitoring of narcosis over time. Five highly practiced subjects were tested for 6 minutes both at the surface and immediately on reaching 10 ATA (60 ft/min descent rate). Each subject was tested 4 times at least two weeks apart. Air was breathed throughout in two sessions and 80120 He42 in two sessions. There was no difference in mean RT between any of the surface conditions or between sessions. At 10 ATA breathing HeO2, there was a small (4 percent) but significant increase in RT which did not vary with time. At 10 ATA breathing air, RT increased over the first 3 minutes, stabilized and then increased again in the final minute (30 percent after 6 minutes). Number of errors showed no increase breathing He-02 at 10 ATA but increased with time breathing air. The RT frequency distributions for 10 ATA breathing He02 indicated the increase in RT was due to a number of extra long times rather than a lengthening of the mean time for the bulk of the responses. For air at 10 ATA both effects were apparent. It was hypothesized that the task was discriminating between narcosis and hyperbaric environmental stress effects, a hypothesis which was sup-ported in a second experiment using N20 at the surface where a lengthening of mean time occurred but no additional extra-long responses were evident. Data is also reported on the ability of the test to detect narcosis at various depths. It is concluded that the test is reliable and can (a) trace the effects of narcosis over time, and (b) discriminate between narcosis and hyperbaric stress effects.
