dc.description.abstract BACKGROUND: Divers Alert Network (DAN)-Japan emergency call service has been utilized for diving accidents of recreational divers since April 1992. When the emergency call comes to DAN-Japan, our medical staff provides advice 24 hours/day. METHODS: All emergency calls that were received from April 1992 to December 1996 were entered into a custom database. RESULTS: The number of all emergency calls recorded was 499. 294 (58.9percent) in total were from recreational divers, and 55 (11.0percent) were from instructors. 31 (6.2percent) were received from physicians regarding treatment of disease related to diving, to help with diagnosis and so on. The number of decompression illness (DCI) was 171 (34.4percent), middle and/or inner ear problems was 28 (5.6percent), pneumothorax was 20 (4.0percent), and sinus problems was 15 (3.0percent). The number of neurological symptoms was 100 (58.5percent in DCI), arthralgia and/or myalgia only was 58 (33.9percent in DCI). CONCLUSION: This survey demonstrates that the emergency call service of DAN-Japan has become a significant system for recreational divers in Japan. en_US
