Author: Sanchez, EC; Gomez, JD; Suarez, AC; Uribe, R
Abstract: Introduction: Radiotherapy causes wide damage, to the irradiated tissue and its surroundings. HBO has proven to be beneficial for soft tissue and bone radionecrosis. There is little experience in the treatment of radionecrosis in the brain. We present a case report of cerebral radionecrosis treated with HBO. Case Report: A 46 year old woman, with history of breast cancer with brain metastases was discharged form oncology with full remission. She had breast an brain oncologyc surgery as well as quimiotherapy and radiotherapy. Actually in treatment with steroids and physical therapy because of spasticity and paraplegia. Her mental functions were intact. She received 20 treatments and showed a 50 percent reduction of the injury by MRI. We also observed clinical improvement with reduction of the spasticity and improved in her physical performance. Conclusions: Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy appears to be one (and many times the only) option for these cases. There was a dramatic improvement clinically and with in the MRI. Further studies need to be conducted to establish the role of HBO in the treatment of these patients.
