dc.description.abstract INTRODUCTION: The possible use of emergency application of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) in the treatment of severe acute injury of the brain has not yet been elucidated completely. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics of cerebral energy metabolism in the rat after application of HBO2 immediately after severe brain injury. METHODS: This study presents the results of continuous brain monitoring inside a barochamber using the multisite assembly (MSA) or the multiparametric assembly (MPA). The MSA or MPA was placed on the surface of rat brains (n=36) in order to measure mitochondrial NADH redox state and/or cerebral blood flow (CBF), extracellular K+, Ca2+ and H+ concentrations and DC potential as well as ECoG. The rats were then subjected to two fatal influences: inhalation of 3000 ppm CO and traumatic brain injury induced by fluid percussion, after which they were treated with 3 ATA oxygen for 1 h. RESULTS: Resuscitation with recovery of the metabolic and electrical activity of the brain was observed in the rats with fatal brain injury that were treated with HBO2. The profound suppression of brain energy metabolism induced by CO exposure was reversible after emergency (no later than 30 min) single exposure to HBO2. CONCLUSIONS: This investigation demonstrates that HBO2 application used immediately after fatal brain injury in rats can be an important factor for the recovery of brain activities and increases the chance of survival. brain injury, HBO2, resuscitation en_US
