Title: [abstract]HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY FOR A DIABETIC FOOT

Abstract: Background: Treatment results of diabetic foot patients treated between 1981 and 2011. Ninety-four patients were our subjects, with 112 problems. Patients had a range of ages between the ages of 37 to 94 years old, and average age was 66.54 years (SD±12.31). Basically, we treated them with wound washing, wound dressing, debridement, medication and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2T). Treatment outcome was as follows: 1. 53 feet were healed, and 2. 26 were not healed completely, but improved. In these cases, we were able to keep limbs or toes. On the other hand, amputated cases were 26. Three were amputated at the level of the femur, while 10 were amputated at the level of the lower leg, and 13 feet were amputated at the toes. Outcome of amputations were as follows: 1. 17 cases were good; and 2. 9 were not after amputation. As for the number of cases according to the Wagner grade, Grade 1 had 40, Grade 2 had 24, Grade 3 had 16, Grade 4 had 24, and Grade 5 had 8. Fifty-seven (89.0 percent) healed or improved in Grade 1 and 2. However, no cases healed or improved in Grade 5. Causes of a diabetic foot are neuropathy, vascular trouble, which infect easily. HBO2T is effective for them for repairing hypoxia and strengthening immunity against bacteria, also encouraging quick wound healing. In the case of gangrene or profound ulcers, HBO2T may reduce the amputation rate or limit the amputation range. Recently, we use “ozone nano bubble water” and/or negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). The outcome of the treatment looks better using this method.
